Are You A Floater Or A Sinker!

Where do you stand in the River of Life? Are you standing in the middle of the stream and life is pouring over you and you’re loving it . . . , or are you drowning and over- whelmed? When was the last time you walked along a dry river bed and really looked at the life the River has led. I would encourage you to get up early one morning when it’s cool and take a walk along one of your dry washes or rivers (it doesn’t need to be dry, there may be water in it) and pay attention to it, its life. Is it alive right now, or silent, waiting for life again?
One day my dog Spirit and I went for a long walk in the Santa Cruz River here in Tucson, Arizona. Because we live in the Arizona desert this river is dry until the monsoons come in July so its path is very striking. Unfortunatly it has a lot of junk in it as well, but so does our lives!
My purpose was to meditate and get some answers to some questions that were bothering me. This is where I have learned to go for the “truth” I’m looking for. As for Spirit, she is my best friend and we are spiritually connected and as dogs go, she was following her nose and running here and there, always keeping me in sight.
I was deep into this meditation thing when this little voice said, “Have you ever really looked at the river and how it compares to your life?” Being a good sport, I said, “Well, no! Not really. I do enjoy the sound of a river and walking along its banks though.”
I know this sounds a bit much, but come on, you’ve had these conversations before where it just sounds like it’s your own voice speaking. Right? I was in the process of giving the Universe a piece of my mind because it wasn’t delivering the business I thought I should be having, I have a website a healingtouch.biz and business was slow. You know what I mean. . . , “God . . ., I know you’re there and you hear me, so why aren’t they breaking my door down. I need them now! yesterday would have even been better.” Ha, I had to laugh, because the voice completely ignored me and kept right on jabbering about the River. Then I began to listen, this voice began to narriate a dialog to me about how our lives resemble the River.
As I walked along, basically in prayer I began to take notice of the River and how it had created a life for its self. And how it really did parallel our lives. Something for you to muse on today.
A stream begins high up in the virgin mountains, with pure uncontaminated water. A tiny bubbly pool of water that eventually starts its journey to meet it’s end. As smaller streams flow into it, it begins to grow and set its course, creating its banks, curves and meeting its life experiences along the way. Sometimes these can be harsh, violent and may meet death early in its life. At the same time this River could run a peaceful expanse of endless curves and run its course without even a waterfall.
W hen you think of a child you think of its birth. They have no preconceived ideas of what should or should not be, just “feed me”. As this child grows and meets other children of different cultures, color and religion the child’s experiences start to grown. As we become adults we struggle with everyday life just as the River does. If you’ll take a moment and tune into the River, let your minds eye see it! Think about how there are wonderful sandy places and gentle curves in this River. Then you may go around a corner and there’s a huge blockage in the middle of the River bed, the River will either go over it, around it or under it. It will have to make a decision, a ‘choice’ as to what path to take.
The sandy places are when we are having a wonderful time in our lives and everything is going just great. Then all of a sudden we hit some boulders, Ouch! But we negotiate them in time and find our way around them. The River is a continuous flow of energy, the only way it is stopped is by cutting it off from it’s self, damming it up or the water simply runs out and life ends.
W hen we look at a place in our life where there is a decision so critical it may mean life or death to us. Perhaps not in the physical, but the emotional. Like a divorce or a separation from a child going off to college. To a mother, this is a very large “stone” in the River Of Life. In the case of a divorce, think about how a River may come to a place where it can no longer stay within the boundaries of its banks. There is too much pressure from the force of life coming down stream and therefore the River will “split” and become two Rivers. Sometimes these will be equal in size, sometimes they won’t, but not to far down stream each River will become a force of their own.
When I asked if you were a floater or a sinker you may have wondered why I would ask such a question. If you can imagine life as lying on your back in a pool of water and floating easily and effortlessly you may be able to recognize this and float safely down the River Of Life. If you are a sinker and you struggle to keep afloat through life’s hardships, you may tire easily and loose strength for the long haul.
We have to know beyond beyond a shadow of doubt that our LIFE will go on! We need to look to our friends and families for support. Think about a leaf and how it always seems to manage to float down the middle, bouncing off rocks, moving quickly where the flow seems to pickup its pace. If we can look at the River and see it as our life we can look beyond the limitations of own perceptions and know that our lives are a series of life experiences and if we stay in the middle (focused) we can ride the rapids and stay afloat!
